CHALLENGE On Kuaishou, one of China’s leading live commerce platforms, many deaf streamers rely on live commerce to make a living, yet they stream in sign language, which hearing viewers can’t follow. As a result, their viewership is limited to the deaf community, with 90% of viewers being deaf. How can we attract more hearing viewers and help deaf streamers earn more? IDEA & EXECUTION Kuaishou teams up with deaf streamer @Jingjing to launch a live commerce stream that is not only legible to the deaf, but also audible to the hearing. We use cameras to capture every sign language movement the streamer makes. Our AI technology recognizes and translates these gestures, matches them to a dedicated sign language database, and then converts the signs into text. Her digital avatar then speaks the content aloud in real time. RESULTS Finally, the live commerce catchphrase "3, 2, 1-link is live!" echoes in this live stream hosted by the deaf streamer. The deaf streamer’s landmark live stream performs impressively: 700K+ viewers, 35% of whom are hearing people, with ¥53,000 in sales within just 2 hours, and 20% of buyers are hearing people new to her live stream. It also gets 360M+ earned media impressions and hits #1 on Kuaishou’s trending topics. Kuaishou is committed to creating more inclusive live streams like Jingjing’s, and has supported over 100 deaf streamers in live commerce to date.
