In Slovenia, mental health issues among teenagers are a growing concern, with one in four facing struggles like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Despite this, mental health is often overlooked by parents, educators, and policymakers. UNICEF Slovenia has long been active in this field, but we wanted to create a project that couldn’t be ignored. Thus, we created The UNICEF Unlockers to shed light on the hidden struggles of youth, particularly in a cultural context where vulnerability is rarely discussed openly. By placing The UNICEF Unlockers installation in front of the national parliament, we aimed to make a powerful visual statement in the heart of Slovenia’s political and cultural landscape. This location symbolized the urgency for both the general public and policymakers to acknowledge and address youth mental health. The project was launched ahead of World Mental Health Day, leveraging this global moment to amplify the conversation on a national scale. The installation’s physical presence created an immediate emotional impact, sparking conversations and action. This immersive experience brought real stories to life, reaching diverse audiences–parents and policymakers alike. With over 10,800 visitors in just three days in a city of only 285,000 residents, this project underscored the urgent need to support adolescents facing mental health challenges.
