On World Mental Health Day, we turned suicide notes into a lifeline. In India, the stigma surrounding suicide often leads individuals to believe their pain is unique. Muktaa Mental Health Helpline aimed to break this silence through raw, honest writing. On World Mental Health Day, we published a letter in The Indian Express made entirely from real excerpts of suicide notes by Virginia Woolf, Annah Faulkner, John Berryman, and Jerzy Kosiński. Though written in different times and places, their words merged seamlessly, revealing a powerful truth: those battling suicidal thoughts are not alone. The copy was real and intimate, offering a rare glimpse into the minds of those who once struggled with suicidal thoughts. It ended with the message: Suicidal thoughts lose their power when shared. Through this, we crafted not just an ad, but a conversation starter. The result? Over 50 individuals reached out to the helpline within a week, with countless more engaging in meaningful conversations on social media. The power of honest writing saved lives.
