Novokuznetsk Airport exists since 1968 and has been serving passengers arriving and departing to Kuzbass for more than 50 years. The old terminal was built back in Soviet times and over time has ceased to meet modern standards and requirements. However, interest in the region is growing and passenger traffic is increasing, which is why there is a need for a new terminal that will hospitably welcome guests, familiarize them with the region and warmly escort them home when it is time to depart. Our task was to create an identity for the new airport terminal. The identity had to convey the spirit of the region, its local flavor and stand out from the typical neutral design of Russian airports. We conducted a research of the region and selected characteristic images. The locals affectionately call the city “Kuznya” (Forge) — which is both associated with harsh blacksmithing, but sounds cozy and homely. So we came to the fact that Novokuznetsk and Kuzbass is a forge. Forge of nature, happiness, character, recreation, emotions. “Forge” as a metaphor for the region became the central idea of the identity. On the one hand — industrial power and harsh climate, on the other — hospitality, warmth and natural wealth. The graphics reflect these contrasts: sharp, “prickly”, but at the same time warm and inviting. Simple shapes turn into complex patterns: cones, snowflakes, flowers. A separate important part of our work was the development of architectural visualization of some interior objects. We studied the fossils and nature of Kuzbass, worked with textures and materials peculiar to the region. The main form used in the interior was the Shorian pattern - laconic and unobtrusive, yet characteristic of the region. The main result of our work is the opening of a new airport terminal with a new authentic identity. Welcome to Novokuznetsk!
